Hi fellow BSG fans!

Here is your chance to submit fan questions for an upcoming interview I'm doing with Dr. Kevin Grazier, the physicist who also acted as the science advisor to Ronald M. Moore on BSG and Virtuality.

To submit a fan question, just go to this post and leave a comment. I'll pick the best few to ask and will certainly re-post the interview here for you all to read.

Cheers!

Yup, that's right - Ron D Moore will be at the next MCM Expo in London.

Just thought I'd post it here as I know there are some Brits around these parts who enjoy the MCM Expo!
D1gital_Prob3 writes with this excerpt from a story about David Myers, a Loyola professor who spent some time studying superhero MMO City of Heroes/Villains: "... he aimed the pointer at his opponent, the virtual comic book villain 'Syphris.' Myers, 55, flicked the buttons on his mouse and magically transported his opponent to the front of a cartoon robot execution squad. In an instant, the squad pulverized the player. Syphris fired an instant message at Myers moments later. 'If you kill me one more time I will come and kill you for real and I am not kidding.' ... As part of his experiment, Myers decided to play the game by the designers' rules — disregarding any customs set by the players. His character soon became very unpopular. At first, players tried to beat him in the game to make him quit. Myers was too skilled to be run off, however. They then made him an outcast, a World Wide Web pariah that the creator of Syphris — along with hundreds of other faceless gamers — detested."

LucasArts today announced that they will soon be releasing games from their back catalog through Steam. The releases begin this Wednesday with a group of eight games, including Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, The Dig, LOOM, and Star Wars: Battlefront II. This is apparently just "the first round of releases," so we can doubtless expect to see more of their old games before long. Joystiq spoke with LucasArts CEO Darrell Rodriguez, who said the company is considering updated versions of the old games, depending on how well next week's launch of Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition goes. He also hinted at the possibility that some games could be ported to mobile gaming devices, such as the PSP Go and the iPhone.

Esther Schindler writes "Those hours you spent rolling dice in your youth weren't wasted according to my 10 Business Lessons I Learned from Playing Dungeons & Dragons. Playing fantasy role playing games did more than teach the rules of combat or proper behavior in a dragon's lair. D&D can instruct you in several skills that can help your career. Such as: 'One spell, used well, can be more powerful than an entire book full of spells' and 'It's better to out-smart an orc than to fight one.'" What other wisdom have you gained from your time sequestered with various RPGs?

Oracle Goddess writes "Sony filed a patent for a system where a camera can dynamically map any real world object for use in a video game. The patent states that the objects 'include items such as coffee mugs, drinking glasses, books, bottles, etc.' While these are given as examples, the object mapping system is not limited to those objects; it can identify any three dimensional object. The system looks similar to Microsoft's Project Natal, but instead of driving with an imaginary steering wheel, players can use an everyday item like a plate. Although this may seem a bit silly at first, the eventual uses for such a system could be wide-ranging and lead to novel and useful controllers for all sorts of systems and applications."

Sighting!

  • Jul. 6th, 2009 at 2:38 AM
Havent posted here in such a long time *sorry!* but just wanted to share my Spaced related brush with fame today.

Whilst waiting on my bus to work, the bus pulled into the bus station and this man got off of it and then realised he wasnt at his destination so he got back on the bus, all the while I was stood there thinking "Why the bugger do I know him?". Whilst waiting in the queue to get on, I could see this man so I kept being a bit creepy and looked at him to try figure out why I recognised him, I was so sure he was famous and this is why I recognised him.

Finally got on the bus, sat down and decided to just give in and search IMDB on my phone because I knew I'd seen him Monarch of the Glen (I was like 83% sure of that!) turns out I had indeed seen him in that...and also in Spaced!
Because sat at the front of my bus to work today was none other than Clive Russell aka Sapced's Damien Knox!
I didnt ask for a pic or an autograph or anything because well...I didnt know how to ask and I didnt want to bother him!

But yeah...thats my claim to fame! Just wanted to share!

Earlier this week, we discussed news that games industry veteran Dave Perry had posted a demo of his upcoming cloud gaming service Gaikai. Now that people have had time to speak with Perry and evaluate the demo, reaction has been surprisingly positive. Quoting Eurogamer: "What struck me about the presentation was that there was absolutely nothing unbelievable in it whatsoever. There were no claims of streaming 720p gameplay at 60 frames per second — games were running in differently sized windows according to how difficult they were to compress, and video itself runs at the internet standard 30FPS. There was no talk of world-beating compression systems that annihilate the work of the best minds in video encoding today, the demo was using the exact same h264 codec that we use ... And finally, there was nothing here to suggest that we were looking at a technological breakthrough that would make our PS3s and Xbox 360s obsolete... just that this was a brand new way to play games in an ultra-accessible manner." By contrast, OnLive was received with much more criticism, in part due to their dramatic promises. While playing online games with Gaikai will naturally add some amount of latency, the article points out that single-player games need not lag more than you'd expect from a console controller. Meanwhile, unlike OnLive, Gaikai is not trying to compete directly with the major console manufacturers, instead trying to work with them in order to deliver their first-party games to new audiences.

Fan Video - And Then You

  • Jul. 5th, 2009 at 12:48 PM
I had done a Cali video using this song for [info]alwaysashipper and then [info]riddledfate used the same song in her Gethsemane/Redux/Redux II fanmix and all these scenes popped into my head so I decided to do it. Very strange to do the same song for two series both with David but eh sometimes it just happens

Not sure how long it will be on You Tube since FOX seems to like removing my vids but I wanted to make it for [info]riddledfate and anyone else interested.

It basically only goes up to Redux II spoiler wise :)

FUNimation announced at their AX panel that in addition to the DVD release of EVANGELION:1.01 this fall, they'll also release the improved EVANGELION:1.11 on Blu-ray and DVD this upcoming spring.

This makes me a very happy camper. Of course, it means more waiting for the best possible version of the movie, but I don't mind.
